About Thornbury Theatre

Located in the Thornbury district of Melbourne, this opened as the New Thornbury Theatre on 1st August 1926. It was independently operated and this continued until 1931 when it was taken over by Hoyts. It was re-modeled (architect unknown at the moment) and became one of their sumptuous chain of Regent Theatres in 1932.

With the introduction of television to Australia in 1956, cinema attendances plummeted and the Regent Theatre went over to part-time operation, only opening on Thursday, Friday & Saturday evenings. It closed on 24th June 1967 and became a ballroom, named the Cantina Ballroom. In the early-2000’s it was converted into a reception hall for weddings and events, named the Midas Reception Hall. In 2010, new owners took over and now re-named Thornbury Theatre, it hosts wrestling matches, live music concerts as well as receptions.

Height Safety Requirement

The Thorbury Theatre was undergoing a massive renovation internally and externally to bring it back to its past glory. Part of the renovation included all new HVAC utilities being installed on the roof. To ensure safe roof access for maintenance of HVAC systems on the extensive roof, the design of the height safety system had to balance safe and practical roof access but also budget constraints. Renovating a heritage listed building always comes with surprises and unplanned costs.
